Antioxidants are effective at fighting oxidative stress because they donate an electron to neutralize a free radical, a molecule with an unpaired electron. When an antioxidant gives away an electron, the antioxidant itself can become a radical. Glutathione is known as the body’s “Master Antioxidant” because of its ability to restore itself after this donation. Glutathione also is able to “recharge” other antioxidants, like vitamin C and vitamin E, so they can continue to squelch free radicals. And with the help of superoxide dismutase and catalase, glutathione is able to turn free radicals into oxygen and water.
