Berberis vulgaris has been used for centuries for lung, spleen, and liver diseases. Berberis is used for infections including diseases of the urinary tract. Traditional uses include liver and gallbladder disease, jaundice, splenopathv, indigestion, diarrhea, tuberculosis, renal disease, urinary tract disorders, gout, rheumatism, arthritis, lumbago, malaria, and leishmaniasis.

Grapefruit Seed extract has been shown to be effective in the treatment of various bowel pathogens. Specifically Candida and Geotrichum yeast species, as well as hemolytic coliform bacteria have been highly sensitive to Grapefruit seed extract. It had no adverse affects on normal fecal organisms. Patients taking grapefruit seed extract noticed improvement in constipation, flatulence and abdominal discomfort.

Juglans nigra (Black Walnut Hull) has a long traditional use as a vermifuge. It has been successfully employed in the treatment of flukes and many intestinal worms.

Origanum vulgare (Oregano) has often been used to treat respiratory disorders and complaints such as coughs and bronchial congestion, as well as urinary infections/disorders and rheumatoid arthritis. Present day use is often as an antifungal for conditions such a candidiasis.

Artemesia anuua (Wormwood) extract possesses antimicrobial effects and is used in the treatment of malaria (specifically Plasmodium Falciparum). Artemesia is often used to treat loss of appetite, dyspepsia, liver/gallbladder complaints, intestinal bloating, worm infestations, intermittent fevers, gastric insufficiency, gastritis, stomachache, and intestinal atony.

Leptandra virginica (Culver's root) is used as a cathartic and emetic. It promotes the secretion of bile, cleansing of the bowel, and detoxifying the liver, gallbladder and gastrointestinal tract.

Violet leaves are a mild laxative and purgative-Extracts made from the flowers are used as an expectorant and narcotic property, although they are much less active as a purgative.

Ulmusfulra (Slippery Elm) is a demulcent and emollient whose main use is in making poultices. It is also taken internally for soothing coughs and healing the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts.

Rhamnus purshiamus (Cascara sagrada) is a mild yet thorough laxative which stimulates the large intestine. It is also used as a stomach tonic in promoting digestion and appetite.

Hydrastis canadinsis (Golden seal) is a tonic, laxative alternative and detergent. It is also an astringent and is effective against hemorrhoids, external sores and nose bleeds.

Quassia is used for fever, dyspepsia, blennorrhagia, stomaches, liver disorders, malaria and as a tonic. Also insecticidal, as a laxative and appetite stimulant. It is used in cases of anorexia nervosa, is effective in chronic diseases of the liver and has anti-malaria activity.

Clove can be used as a topical antiseptic and anesthetic. Other uses for clove, such as premature ejaculation, dry socket, and fever reduction lack reliable human clinical evidence.

Garlic has been used for centuries for the treatment of many infections. Recently, garlic was shown to be antibacterial (1% of penicillin strength), anti-fungal and antiviral. Some organisms for which garlic has been shown to be effective are: Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Mycobacterium smegmatis, Steptocyces griseus, Staphylococcus aureus, Lactobacillus plantarium, Cryptococcal meningitis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Xanthomonas maltophilia, herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2, parainfluenza virus type 3, vaccinia virus, vesicular stomatitis virus, and human rhinovirus type 2. It also has been shown to have many great cardiovascular effects like inhibiting plaque build up and to reduce fat accumulation in arterial cells. Cholesterol production in the liver is reduced with garlic, through its inactivation of thiol groups in the enzyme HMG CoA reductase.

Plantain stops the intestinal lining from attracting bacteria that are thought to contribute to inflammatory episodes in IBD.

Pumpkin Seed is a rich source of Beta-sitosterol. Administration of pumpkin seed extract/oils or the purified beta-sitosterol may be beneficial for prostate health. Overall prostate scores, urine flow and prostate volume improved during therapy in some studies.
