The Pituitary Gland (PT) is divided into the anterior and posterior pituitary. It is often referred to as the master gland, as it secretes a battery of hormones that collectively influence all cells, and affect virtually all physiologic processes in the body. For example, the anterior pituitary secretes thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and growth hormone, while the posterior pituitary secretes the hormones vasopressin, also called anti-diuretic hormone, and oxytocin.
The hypothalamus (HPT), the power house behind the pituitary, secretes hormones that strictly control secretion of hormones from the anterior pituitary. Located below the thalamus (brain area that relays sensory information) and above the pituitary gland and brain stem, the hypothalamus plays a significant role in the endocrine system. Hypothalamic hormones are referred to as “releasing hormones and inhibiting hormones”, reflecting their influence on anterior pituitary hormones. An endocrine feedback system involving the pituitary and the hypothalamus controls the secretion of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) by the thyroid gland, resulting from the production of TSH by the pituitary. The hypothalamus is often noted as the link between the endocrine and nervous systems.
