Recently, garlic was shown to be antibacterial (1% of penicillin strength), anti-fungal and antiviral. Some organisms for which garlic has been shown to be effective are: Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Mycobacterium smegmatis, Steptocyces griseus, Staphylococcus aureus, Lactobacillus plantarium, Cryptococcal meningitis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Xanthomonas maltophilia, herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2, parainfluenza virus type 3, vaccinia virus, vesicular stomatitis virus, and human rhinovirus type 2.
